The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus illness COVID-19 rose above 221,000 on Wednesday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University, and the nation’s leading public health agency estimated that the pandemic has caused the deaths of almost 300,000 Americans, including fatalities that would not have happened without the virus.
