With restored bridge, Crossings Mall businesses prepare to reopen

On its first day of operation in more than a year, the Kroger gas station at Crossings Mall had steady business Friday, manager Dan Workman said.
The fuel center opened at 6 a.m. Residents still have a few more weeks to wait for the grocery store, though. Workman said it's pushing to reopen at the end of August.
"I've had a few hugs this morning," Workman said. "... People are thrilled that we're open back up, even if it's just the fuel center."

 

WV Governor's Office announces investigation of late audits

Nick Casey, chief of staff to Gov. Jim Justice, outlined Friday an investigation to determine accountability for late filings of state higher education audits with the U.S. Department of Education, an omission that is resulting in $245 million of penalties in reduced federal funding for Pell grants and federally subsidized student loans for state colleges and universities.

South Charleston dermatologist opening new, bigger office

West Virginia Dermatology & Skin Surgery Center is opening a new, larger office in South Charleston.
This month, Pray Construction Co. began building the two-story, 11,500 square-foot office building at 4216 MacCorkle Ave. Southwest in South Charleston.
Dr. David Judy and his staff will occupy 6,000 square feet on the second floor. Judy will lease the first floor to a tenant or tenants. He expects the building to be complete at the end of January 2018.

n West Virginia American Water has issued a temporary water outage beginning at 9 a.m. and be completed within 12 hours on Monday for approximately 220 customers in the Central Avenue area of South Charleston. The affected area will include Central Avenue from Box 329 to Daniels Avenue, Daniels Avenue, Staunton Avenue South West, Powers Street, Valley Drive, Byng Drive, Sutherland Drive from Central Avenue to Box 240, Glendale Avenue from n Daniels Avenue to Box 710 and Carmen Drive.

 

Trump pushes out Reince Priebus, names John F. Kelly chief of staff

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump says Gen. John F. Kelly is his new White House chief of staff.
That means Reince Priebus is out.Trump tweeted: "I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff. He is a Great American."
Kelly is currently the secretary of Homeland Security.
Trump tweeted that Kelly "has been a true star of my administration."

 

FDA to target addictive levels of nicotine in cigarettes

For the first time, the federal government is proposing cutting the nicotine level in cigarettes so they aren't so addictive.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration chief Scott Gottlieb on Friday directed the agency's staff to develop new regulations on nicotine. The FDA has had the power since 2009 to regulate nicotine levels but hasn't done so. Stocks of cigarette makers plunged after the announcement.

 

Trump to attend rally in Huntington

President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit Huntington on Thursday evening for a rally.
According to separate news releases, one from his press office office and one from his re-election campaign, Trump will be at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The releases state visitors cannot bring homemade signs, banners, professional cameras with detachable lenses, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, backpacks or large bags to the event.

 

West Virginia names prison substance abuse control chief

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia prison officials have tapped a career law enforcement officer to crack down on illegal drug smuggling.
Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety Secretary Jeff Sandy has named Jack Luikart as director of correctional substance abuse control.

 

Charleston Town Center Teavana to close

Starbucks has announced it will close all of its Teavana stores nationwide Thursday, including the location in the Charleston Town Center mall.
Starbucks said in a release that the decision came after the stores continued to under-perform financially.
About 3,300 people are employed by Teavana. There are 379 Teavana stores nationwide, mostly located in malls. Most locations will be shut down by next Spring, Starbucks said. Teavana employees will be invited to apply for jobs at Starbucks locations.
