Attractions, neighborhoods go all out with holiday lights

Christmas lights have taken over neighborhoods, businesses and parks across Amarillo. New light displays have popped up this year, including a display of 400,000 lights at the newly constructed Town Square Village and a half-mile drive through the 10-acre Enchanted Acres Horse Farm.

More than just dance

“The Nutcracker” is more than an annual performance for the Lone Star Ballet; it’s a family tradition for the many students and parents who dance in the production each season.
The cast works to revive the classic ballet each year with surprise additions, but the heart of the story and those who tell it remain the same.
“Roxann started as an angel in ‘The Nutcracker’ in 1993, and I helped backstage,” costume designer Elaine Seaton said of her daughter. “It was about 1995 when they figured out I could sew.”

 

Amarillo Opera plans throwback 'Cinderella' performance

There’s no fairy godmother in this version of the fairy tale, but Amarillo Opera’s upcoming production of “Cinderella” is still sure to enchant audience members.
Director Ben Burke said this production of Seymour Barab’s one-hour English opera takes its cues from the original tale written by the Brothers Grimm. Although it departs from the popular Disney film of the same name, this version still holds true to the message everyone knows and loves from any version of the story.

 

Eastridge Elementary receives $5K grant

Eastridge Elementary School is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from bestselling author James Patterson and Scholastic Reading Club, Amarillo ISD announced Friday.
A district news post said the funds will be used to support the school’s library and purchase books “more reflective” of the school’s student population, which is mostly Asian.
Patterson, known for the Alex Cross series of books, has donated $3.5 million to schools across the nation since partnering with Scholastic in 2015.

 

'80s chart-toppers to play on 1 Amarillo stage

Five of the biggest players from the 1980s and ’90s — RATT, Winger, Lita Ford, FireHouse and Jack Russell’s Great White — will rock the stage Friday at Azteca Music Hall, 500 Farm-to-Market Road 1912.

Amarillo College to perform 'Pseudolus'

The Amarillo College Theatre production of “Pseudolus,” written by Plautus, will be the troupe’s second play of this season.
It is an ancient Roman farce about the slave Pseudolus and his dedication to help his master, Calidorus, free his love.
The show will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Dec. 11.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for senior citizens, AC students and employees and other qualified students.

Tickets are on sale now for Foreigner’s Jan. 30 performance in the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Auditorium.
Founded in 1976, the British-American band has sold more than 80 million albums and has earned multi-platinum success around the world with a mix of blues and pop, continuing to captivate several generations of fans.
The band’s biggest hit, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” topped the UK and American charts.

'Bachelorette' stud plans local concert

Singer-songwriter Luke Pell will perform at Midnight Rodeo on Dec. 16.
Known for capturing hearts across America on Season 12 of ABC’s hit television series “The Bachelorette,” Pell is a former U.S. Army captain who has worked with many hit songwriters, including producer Brandon Kinney, country music superstar Cole Swindell, Ash Bowers, Jaron Boyer, Dan+Shay and more.
Pell accepted a football scholarship to the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2003.

 

Weather forces Electric Light Parade cancellation

Due to the forecast of rain and snow, Center City has canceled its Electric Light Parade that was scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. in downtown Amarillo.
An email from Center City executive director Beth Duke confirmed the decision.
“We have only had to cancel the parade one other time in more than 20 years,” Duke said. “With the forecast of rain turning to snow, we are canceling tonight’s event. Based on the weather forecast and the safety and comfort of the parade participants, we have decided to cancel tonight’s event.

 

Potter County hosts 'Coffee with Sheriff'

Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas will host a ‘Coffee with the Sheriff’ event on Tuesday at Chaparral Hills Baptist Church worship center, located at 4000 Cherry Ave..
The meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. is open to the public, and Sheriff Thomas hopes community members will come to discuss current issues and concerns.
The event is also a chance for residents to meet Sheriff Thomas, ask questions, and discuss ways to work together and keep the community safe.
