Planning and Zoning Commission: 3 p.m. Council Chambers, City Hall, 509 S.E. Seventh Ave. Members will consider rezoning requests as well as action regarding the North Heights Neighborhood Plan.
Canyon City Commission: 5 p.m. 301 16th Street, Canyon. Members will undergo staff training, hear a presentation from Republic Waste Services regarding the landfill and consider suspending the effective date of West Texas Gas rate increases.

Teen Christmas brings hope

For two Amarillo teenage girls, a $75 shopping spree would be a far-fetched item to write on their Christmas wish lists. The pair live with their single mother, who battles an ongoing kidney disease.
Although their mother works two jobs, the family struggles to afford much more than the essentials.
At Christmas, one gift is considered an abundance.
But for the past two years Tatiyanna and Tahnia Wilson have wandered the racks at Amarillo’s mall, using vouchers to purchase clothes and shoes at Christmas.

 

Endless pancakes raise money for students to break college barriers

For the second consecutive year, the Applebee’s restaurant on Amarillo Boulevard partnered with the Nehemiah Project to help raise funds Saturday morning that will ultimately help send young adults to college.
For $7 volunteers from the Nehemiah Project worked as waitstaff and served up all-you-can-eat pancakes and bacon.

Santa shares science with kids

Don Harrington Discovery Center held its annual Breakfast With Santa expedition Saturday morning.
Discovery Center Executive Director Dr. Aaron Pan said, “This is our wonderful community celebration of Christmas and the holidays and family fun. It’s a lot of fun activities and crafts as well as science learning. It’s a great time at the Discovery Center.”

1 dead, 7 injured after bus with cheerleaders crashes in West Texas

BIG SPRING — Officials say one person is dead and at least seven were injured when a bus carrying high school cheerleaders and sponsors crashed with a tractor-trailer rig late Friday on Interstate 20.
The Iraan-Sheffield bus carrying the cheerleaders crashed in Howard County after a football playoff game against Munday Friday evening in Colorado City, according to the Associated Press and A-J Media reports.

Medical clinic moves into old San Jacinto YMCA

While the rest of Amarillo digested its Thanksgiving feast, Diversified Improvement Contractors paved a new path through a San Jacinto field, one that leads from Heal the City medical clinic’s past to its future in the abandoned Midtown YMCA.
Heal the City has opened its new, larger facility at 609 S. Carolina St., covering gymnasium floors with carpet and using cubicles as treatment rooms. All services — consultation, examination and medication — are free, although patients are asked to donate $5 if possible.
