Gasoline stocks soar, pushing down gas prices

NASHVILLE — Luckily for motorists, gas prices are continuing to decline across the state and the nation.
Tennessee’s average gas price is $2.43 per gallon for regular unleaded, the seventh lowest average in the nation. The average is 6 cents less than last week, 12 cents less than a month ago and 20 cents less than one year ago, AAA reported.
Today’s national average is $2.64, which is 7 cents less expensive than last Monday, 13 cents less than a month ago and 21 cents cheaper than a year ago.

Hawkins high-speed chase ends with crash at Kingsport Lowe's

KINGSPORT — At least one suspect is in custody following a high-speed chase Monday evening that began in Hawkins County and ended with a crash at the West Stone Drive Lowe’s in Kingsport.
The suspect vehicle, which was reportedly driven by a female, crashed into the garden center at the West Stone Drive Lowe’s.
Witnesses at the scene told the Times News there were some injuries, including the suspect, but none that appeared life threatening. 
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating.
The Times News will release more information as it becomes available.
 

 

Danville outslugs K-Mets in game featuring 28 hits

KINGSPORT — There was another slugfest at Hunter Wright Stadium on Monday.
Like heavyweight boxers slugging it out, the Danville Braves and Kingsport Mets threw one offensive punch after another. In the end, Danville was left standing with an 11-7 Appalachian League win.
The game featured a combined 28 hits, including five home runs.
The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Braves (20-32). It also put them up 1-0 in the three-game series at Kingsport, scheduled to continue Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. start at Hunter Wright.

 

Belton, Berkshire take top honors at Tennessee Big Shots

KINGSPORT — Alexis Belton and Kyle Berkshire provided plenty of drama for the second edition of the Tennessee Big Shots, but as Golf Channel’s telecast came to a close Monday night, the two were holding the trophies.
Belton survived a travel nightmare to win the women’s championship at Cattails at MeadowView Golf Course and Berkshire survived a do-or-die swing in the semifinals to win and retain his world No. 1 ranking.

 

Niswonger Classic remains a favorite of the pros

BRISTOL, Va. — For the professional golfers who played in the Niswonger Children’s Hospital Classic at The Olde Farm Golf Club, it was time well spent.
Two dozen pros participated in Monday’s world-class Pro-Am scramble, the largest fundraiser of the year for the only children’s hospital in the Tri-Cities region. To date, the event has raised over $5 million.
Mike Hulbert, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour and an East Tennessee State alum, has traveled the world with the sport, even serving as an assistant on the Ryder Cup team.

 

Hamlin fancies another trophy from night race

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Denny Hamlin added a second Daytona 500 trophy to his personal collection earlier this year. Now, he wants a second trophy from the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race.
The driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota says his win in the 2011 night race ranks near the very top of his 34 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victories.
“It’s definitely a big one for us. That trophy is a special one,” said the 38-year-old driver from Chesterfield, Virginia. “It’s the same for many years.

 

Norman Wilson, Jr.

KINGSPORT - Norman Wayne Wilson, Jr., 53, of Kingsport, departed this life to be with the Lord, August 7, 2019 at his residence.
Born in Scranton, PA on November 5, 1965, a son of Norman, Sr. and Sandra “Sandy” Wilson; he had resided in this area most of his life. He graduated from Sullivan North High School in 1983. Norman was a veteran of the United States Marines, having served in the Gulf War. He retired from Kingsport Press on disability. Norman was a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

KINGSPORT - Harry Tate Beckner, 98, of Kingsport, passed away Saturday morning, August 10, 2019 at Baysmont.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport.

 

Register your youngsters now for the Sept. 7 Church Hill Trout Rodeo

CHURCH HILL — The Church Hill Parks and Recreation Department is asking parents to register their youngsters early for the annual Church Hill Trout Rodeo, which takes place the morning of Sept. 7 at Jaycees Park.
Registration will be available the morning of the event, but pre-registration will help reduce the wait.
Every year approximately 500 “eating size” trout are dumped into Alexander Creek at Jaycees Park, which will be dammed at intervals to trap the fish.
