Kevin Harvick wins NASCAR Cup race at Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Kevin Harvick is so confident in his talent and team he doesn’t get excited when he wins.
“It’s more of an expectation,” Harvick said.
He raced to the 47th Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory of his career and his second in less than a month Sunday, pulling away from the pack to win at Michigan International Speedway for the second straight year.
With just three races before the playoffs, the timing of his latest strong performance may help him win a second championship.

 

Race week party starts Monday at MeadowView

The Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race, the largest sporting event of the year in the Mountain Empire region, is just days away.
Leading into the race is a full week of activities with events in each of the Tri-Cities before the action shifts to Bristol Motor Speedway for 1,150 laps of action.
Race week parties start Monday at MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center in Kingsport. The free event — which coincides with the Tennessee Big Shots Benefiting Niswonger Children’s Hospital World Long Drive competition — runs from 6-10 p.m.

KINGSPORT — To help make the Miracle Field project a reality, supporters are encouraging you to challenge your friends and family to “Pitch It Forward” this summer.
It’s a quick and easy social media challenge aimed at raising awareness about the Miracle Field and to bring in some much-needed donations to help complete the project’s funding.

IPMS Nats the Holy Grail of aging model enthusiasts

CHATTANOOGA — Some folks go to boat shows, gun shows and car shows. Some of us go to Nats.
If you’re of a certain age, you went through the childhood ritual of building a plastic model. Back in my day, it meant saving your allowance or waiting for your birthday or Christmas for that box with cool art of an aircraft carrier, jet fighter or bomber, Sherman or Tiger tank, Corvette or Camaro or a tractor-trailer rig.

 

For Kingsport Speedway GM Tunnell, racing's in her blood

KINGSPORT — Kingsport Speedway General Manager Karen Tunnell literally grew up at the racetrack.
A native of St. Paul, her father started racing Modifieds in Pennsylvania before she was born. She describes the sport as something that’s always been in the family, in her blood.
Tunnell spent many Saturday nights at Lonesome Pine Raceway before getting into the business, in which she has worked more than two decades — the last six years as the manager at Kingsport Speedway.

 

Scott County water, sewer projects moving forward

GATE CITY — Several water and sewer projects are making progress in Scott County.
Mike Dishman, executive director of the Scott County Public Service Authority, gave an update on current and future projects at Wednesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. Below is a list of some of the projects and where they stand:
• Fairview Waterline Extension: “We were able to obtain $465,000 more in grants to extend that project further and serve more of Phase Two, because the only funding we had at that point was for Phase One,” Dishman said.

 

Edna Bloomer Bledsoe

BLACKWATER, VA - Edna Bloomer Bledsoe, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday afternoon, August 10, 2019 at NHC Kingsport.
She was born January 18, 1929 at the family home place (known as the Sinks), in Fairview, VA. Edna graduated from the old Fairview High School. She lived most of her life in Fairview, moving to Kingsport for short periods of time. She worked at Eastman, Borden Mills, several sewing factories, and she served as a school aide at Fairview and Rye Cove Elementaries. Edna had a passion for reading and she loved being an educator.

KINGSPORT - Harry Tate Beckner, 98, of Kingsport, passed away Saturday morning, August 10, 2019 at Baysmont.

KINGSPORT - Norman Wayne Wilson, Jr., 53, Kingsport, TN departed this life to be home with the Lord on August 7, 2019 at his residence.

Berkshire earns top seed at Tennessee Big Shots

KINGSPORT — Kyle Berkshire went into the Tennessee Big Shots as the world’s No. 1-ranked long driver, and he didn’t disappoint on Sunday.
Berkshire grabbed the top seed heading into Monday’s quarterfinals of the World Long Drive tour stop, leading a field of big hitters after two days of qualifying at Cattails at MeadowView Golf Course.
“I definitely caught fire toward the end,” Berkshire said. “Toward the middle of the tournament, I kind of lost my rhythm a little bit.
