Phoenix forwards Mikkel Boedker and Radim Vrbata beat Sharks goalie Antti Niemi with backhanders in close during the shootout to break up the goaltender's duel. Defenseman Brent Burns made his season debut after missing the first 10 games and training camp while recovering from offseason hernia surgery. Burns, who paired with Brad Stuart at even strength and saw time (2:09) on the power play, logged 20:38 of ice time spread over 21 shifts. Rookie defenseman Matt Irwin was assigned to Worcester of the AHL to open a roster spot for Burns.
