Cueto has six-run inning in homecoming, but Giants storm back to win A good chunk of baseball fandom concluded that Johnny Cueto was mentally soft after he dropped a ball on the mound then immediately allowed a home run in the 2013 National League Wild Card game as 40,000 Pittsburgh fans derisively chanted his name. Cueto is stoic and tough enough to shunt aside a horrible inning quickly, as he did in Monday night's 9-6 comeback victory. Yet just as he did after a five-run first inning against the Dodgers in his second start, Cueto followed the horror inning with shutdown work, this time two perfect innings that kept the Giants in the game. Brandon Crawford, whose three-run homer capped a five-run seventh inning against the Reds' porous bullpen and gave the Giants the lead, said Cueto was the same on the mound in the rough third inning as he was in his four scoreless frames. A sparse crowd gave him a standing ovation as he went to pitch the first inning and a hearty cheer when he batted in the second, just before he grounded a two-run single to right as part of a three-run inning. Votto then crushed a three-run homer over the center-field wall. Three hits and a a walk later, the Reds had a six-spot and Cueto had thrown three innings worth of pitches. Cueto stopped the bleeding and the Giants came back against a bullpen that matched a modern record by allowing at least one run in 20 straight games. Crawford added an RBI single in the ninth, giving him four RBIs and two hits with runners in scoring position, one more than he had all season.
