Before marrying Book Editor Ken Raymond, I had probably read about one scary book and declared I wasn't a horror fan after watching "The People Under the Stairs" in junior high. In 13 years, my reading and viewing tastes have expanded to include more ghosts, ghouls and other things that go bump in the night. One book, though, was too scary for me to finish. "The Ruins" is the second novel by Scott Smith, who also wrote "A Simple Plan," both of which have been made into feature films. In "Ruins," four Americans on vacation in Mexico befriend a few Europeans and get sucked into a search for a German man's brother in the jungle. And that is where my terror begins.
