Before this school year began, a principal at one of Greeley’s poorest elementary schools thought it would be a good idea to get his teachers together and ask them a question. “Why are you still here?” Maplewood Principal Mark Thompson posited. Answering was optional, Thompson said, but every teacher did. Tears flowed as teacher after teacher explained why they stayed at a school where they hear horror stories of divorce and drug use, situations that don’t seem to give their students a chance.
