Both shows are Americanized versions of European source material, with equally unlikely premises and a shared attempt to blend comedy with drama. Debra Messing (“Smash”) plays New York homicide detective Laura Diamond, who may drive a station wagon and wear Spanx beneath her suburban mom attire, but when it comes to catching bad guys, is as tough as they come. On the job, both are very good cops, but in separate precincts, which is probably a good idea because they’re separated and Laura is pressing Jake to sign the divorce papers. Having established herself as a gifted comic actress in “Will & Grace” and done OK, at least, in the ultimately unsalvageable showbiz drama “Smash,” Messing is sufficiently versatile to handle the central role here without breaking either a sweat or any new ground.
