The issue is as clear as it is pressing. If the Rockies’ frustrated offense doesn’t round out — as it did during Sunday’s small, albeit promising, sample size in an 8-2 romp over the Reds — it will probably threaten the team’s second-half chances at a playoff berth. And it seems evident that for now, Colorado, unwilling to give up top farm prospects and betray the draft-and-build ideal that has largely gotten the franchise to its current state, is intent on finding that answer with continued faith in an array of unestablished players. Fueling that persistence by manager Bud Black and general manager Jeff Bridich is the defensive versatility of said unestablished players, as exemplified by Ryan McMahon being recalled to start both weekend games at second base. During Saturday’s game, McMahon made his first major-league start at the position and had a number of solid plays, flashing hand quickness and arm strength.
