Jimmy Stewart, one of the few celebrities to fight in full combat during World War II, was a different man after his return. Before the war, he was a top box office star, a charming comic talent, an Oscar winner and a single man about town. After the war, he showed a darker side, beginning with “It’s a Wonderful Life.” That film underperformed at the box office, as did others. He married, and even considered leaving Hollywood for the airline industry (he was an early investor in Southwest Airlines). Then director Anthony Mann cast Stewart in a series of tough Westerns set in remote places where morality was tested.
