Southeast Texas activists and religious leaders teamed up Monday night to support the thousands of Central American children who have surrendered at the Texas border this summer to escape political turmoil, gang violence and extreme poverty in their native countries. "The highest authority in the Catholic Church is telling us that, as Catholics, we should share and ease the pain of these immigrants," Gutierrez said in Spanish to the crowd in front of the courthouse.
