The Cal and Stanford football teams did a great thing when the Pac-10 planned its expansion five years ago. Cal’s Sonny Dykes is trying to legitimize a fractured defensive unit in a conference featuring six teams in the AP’s preseason top 25; any kind of lofty expectation simply wouldn’t be realistic. David Shaw is exactly the kind of coach Stanford needs, and in light of the Cardinal’s admirable balance between performance and academics, he’s not going anywhere unless he fancies the NFL. There was no other way to interpret his slurred speech and body language, and a disgusted athletic director Pat Haden had to pull him off the stage. The Wildcats’ Casey Skowron nailed an apparent game-winning field goal with 17 seconds left, but Sarkisian pulled the conniving, weak-minded stunt of calling timeout just as the ball was snapped (Skowron was forced to kick again, and missed). During last year’s Oregon game, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich began stalking Mora, grabbed him by the shoulder, then handed him his play card and yanked off his headset, as if to quit right there on the spot. Two months ago, rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs barged into the weight room and assaulted strength coach Sal Alosi for shouting at his son, a member of the team. [...] just this month, during an open practice, Mora made a public spectacle out of embarrassing his prized freshman quarterback, Josh Rosen, with belittling remarks. Whether Cal’s Jared Goff can rise above the pack in a conference loaded with quarterbacks, including USC’s Cody Kessler, Arizona State’s Mike Bercovici, Arizona’s Anu Solomon, Oregon’s Vernon Adams and the Cardinal’s Kevin Hogan.
