ROGERSVILLE — A Kingsport man who critically injured an elderly Hawkins County woman in a 2016 DUI head-on collision was sentenced to three years last Friday in Hawkins County Criminal Court. Jacob Andrew Edwards, 24, pleaded guilty to charges including vehicular assault, felony reckless assault, improper passing, failure to exercise due care, no insurance, and registration violation. Andrews must serve 30 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole, and he was also ordered by Judge John Dugger to pay $2,512 in fines and fees. According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report, the wreck occurred on the afternoon of May 30, 2016 on Goshen Valley Road near the Christians Bend Road intersection. The report states that a 1999 Honda Civic driven by Edwards attempted to pass a 2002 Chevy Avalanche in a no passing zone and struck the SUV in the rear. The Honda then reportedly continued north, crossed the center line and struck a 2003 Ford Taurus head-on. An 86-year-old passenger in the Taurus was critically injured in the collision. Other guilty pleas heard by Dugger on May 17 included: — Nickey Daniel Hatcher, 39, Surgoinsville, who was sentenced to eight years and ordered to pay $5,749 in fines and fees for delivery of meth, simple possession of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for drug use, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hatcher was arrested in a March 3, 2016 HCSO raid on a Carters Valley Road residence near Surgoinsville, where police seized three loaded handguns, approximately two ounces of meth packaged in separate bags, marijuana, hundreds of zip lock baggies, drug ledgers, glass pipes, syringes and electronic scales. Police say they also found approximately $1,500 cash, brass knuckles and a Taser.
