Five years and three days after the Waldo Canyon fire started, a community picnic and concert will mark the anniversary of the deadly blaze. The event will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mountain Shadows Community Park at Flying W Ranch Road and Champagne Drive. Residents will have the chance to remember what was lost in the fire, which claimed the lives of two people and destroyed 347 homes, and honor the resiliency of communities affected by the disaster. The Gazette observed the anniversary with a three-part series, published this week, that explored the fire's legacy, the slowly-healing ecological scars it left behind and the lessons learned from the catastrophe.
