Pat Montandon, famous for being a belle of the San Francisco society ball, hostess of a roundtable luncheon that attracted locals and stars from afar, then wronged wife and fierce petitioner for divorce, leader of children in around-the-world quests for peace, and (whew!) now writer of memoirs, was in town last week in conjunction with the publication of “Peeing on Hot Coals,” the latest volume of her life story. Old friend Leonard Perillo organized a delicious dinner for her at 1300 Fillmore, where — at 86, still wearing feathers in her silver hair — she looked to the future (loving her son, Sean Wilsey, who was there, and his family) and remembered the past, especially luncheons that included Joan Baez, Bill Graham, Gloria Steinem and Eldridge Cleaver. “It was so astonishing to be in the penthouse with him,” she said of Cleaver, recalling that he’d brought her a gift from his clothing line, a flowered pair of velvet underpants with attached velvet penis. Roger Thornhill was (1) Interacting with a bank website when he was asked to set up a security question: “Who was your archrival when you were growing up?” (Is there any one among us who only had one?); (2) Examining a Mill Valley chiropractor’s complimentary exam certificate. William Rodarmor, a member of Kaiser Permanente, was astonished at the honesty of a piece of mail he received from the health care giant recently.
