'Exodus' rides past the competition at the box office Gods and Kings" dominated the box office this weekend, riding past "The Hunger Games: The 20th Century Fox biblical epic, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Christian Bale as Moses, cost an estimated $140 million to make. The film, based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed, added $1.5 million for a strong per-screen average of more than $13,000. With Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Ramses, this is an entertaining, if somewhat secular, version of the biblical story, with a strong beginning, a great finish and about a half-hour in the middle that you could sleep through and not miss anything. Not the strongest effort from DreamWorks Animation, but it does provide lots of high-velocity cartoon action and gags designed to appeal to all demographics. Chris Rock has finally made a movie that's as consistently funny and inventive as his stand-up comedy. Powered by the prodigious intellect of Christopher Nolan (the "Dark Knight" trilogy; "Inception"), "Interstellar" contains top-shelf visual effects that will surely make Oscar's short list. A big improvement over the original, this installment finds the hapless trio (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis) starting their own business and getting undermined by ruthless businessmen and investors. Either out of nostalgia, or a sense of loyalty, or some epic misreading of the script, or a payday beyond the dreams of most mere mortals, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels agreed to appear in this ghastly sequel, which is more than just not funny. Eddie Redmayne's uncanny performance as Stephen Hawking highlights this well-directed biopic, which juggles the stories of Hawking's discoveries, his illness, his amazing survival and his loving but turbulent marriage. Though the experience of watching this film feels a little like a hike at times, this story of a troubled woman who attempts to break with her past by going on a dangerous 1,100-mile trek maintains interest and features a good performance by Reese Witherspoon.
