Sosifa Esera held back tears as he shared his 2-year-old son’s final words to him with a sea of mourners gathered Thursday in an Oakland chapel for the funeral of his little boy who was killed last week when he chased a ball into the path of an AC Transit bus. Oakland Police officers who responded to the incident where so shaken up they raised over $20,000 in an online GoFundMe campaign to pay for Jeremiah’s funeral and burial expenses, and to help his family. Jeremiah was laid in a white open casket and dressed all in white, including white baseball cap on his head. The grieving family gave the police department a similar blanket, in keeping with customs of their Tongan heritage. All of the family members wore black with a garment made by bark around their waist known as ta’ovala, a sign of respect in Tongan culture. The memorial service program was adorned with photos of Spider-Man, Jeremiah’s favorite superhero. “Mia was very protective of him,” said Taupaki, as her daughter played in the driveway of the chapel wearing a black shirt with photos of Jeremiah printed onto it.
