The driver suspected in the hit-and-run death of a Columbia County jogger has been taken into custody. According to a statement from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Michael Cheek, 38, of the 600 block of Laurel Place, Martinez, is in the Aiken County jail facing charges of vehicular homicide in the first degree, hit and run, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane. He is charged in the death of Timothy Smith, of Wheeler Road, who was struck while running along the highway about 8 p.m.
