In a 2012 Guardian profile around the publication of “Umbrella” — the first book in a planned trilogy that includes the recently released “Shark” — British novelist Will Self said, “I don’t really write for readers.” He expressed impatience with naturalistic fiction. “I just find it dull,” he said. “You cannot capture what’s going on with that form.
The celebrated author died at 94 on Thursday.

P. D. James, the British author whose cerebral murder mysteries brought a new level of sophistication to the genre and who created such enduring characters as the erudite but melancholy Scotland Yard sleuth Adam Dalgliesh and the resourceful private investigator Cordelia Gray, died Nov. 27 at her home in Oxford, England.
As late as the 1970s, it was hard to find Philip Larkin’s poetry in American bookstores. I remember searching all over Washington for his first collection, “The North Ship” (1945), before locating a paperback in the now long-gone Daedalus Bookshop next to the Uptown Theater. I already owned shabby copies of “The Less Deceived” (1955), “The Whitsun Weddings” (1964) and “High Windows” (1974), but I can no longer remember how I first discovered Larkin’s work.
