It was a lowdown deception. It was a computer fabrication. It was the future of politics. How fitting that the man who introduced the malevolent use of deepfakes to American politics was Ron DeSantis, the governor who created his pugnacious political brand by sliming gays, immigrants, teachers, college professors, historians, reporters, Mexicans, librarians, drag queens, Disney, epidemiologists, Black activists, environmentalists, tech moguls, textbook publishers, and now, of all people, Donald Trump. The DeSantis campaign has created a fake video featuring an AI-generated Trump — a deception misrepresenting the arch deceiver.
