Flagler County Students Must Still Wear Their Ids

BUNNELL – When classes resume Aug. 24, students will find the dress code rules have become a bit more liberal, but some things will not change.The School Board considered an amendment Tuesday that would have allowed middle and high school students to carry their identification cards on their persons, rather than requiring them to wear the IDs on lanyards.The proposal was made to address the problem of IDs breaking and therefore becoming unwearable.However, Chairwoman Colleen Conklin said she had heard from members of the public who were concerned about safety.“I understand the concern in the community that IDs must be visible,” she said.Board members debated various options, including whether to require students to carry IDs if not wearing them.Board Member Trevor Tucker said he didn't see how both options could be approved.“To me, it's one or the other,” he said.In the end, Board Member Sue Dickinson moved that the ID policy remain unchanged.The board passed that motion unanimously, with Board Member Andy Dance not present.In May, the board agreed to relax the dress code policy to permit students in grades nine through 12 to wear stripes and plaids in addition to solid colors.
