The case came to the attention of authorities when one of the pharmacies where Mathy was filling prescriptions complained to UC police, who brought the matter to the attention of the district attorney’s office, according to prosecutors. Mathy, who attended the Duke University School of Medicine and has been in practice for more than 10 years, according to his online profile on US News & World Report, was arrested last Friday on three counts of issuing a false prescription, three counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud, and three counts of forgery, according to the district attorney’s office. Mathy was placed on probation by the Medical Board of California in February after a complaint was filed against him alleging that he had been prescribing controlled substances — including Ritalin, Xanax, Atvian and Vicodin — to at least four fictitious patients for more than 10 years, state records show.
