Mika Yoga WearDenver-based Mika Yoga Wear has stopped selling an artist-designed yoga mat printed with the image of the Hindu deity Ganesha after protest by Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism. Zed has a long history of pressuring retailers to pull items he says disrespect the important Hindu god. Denver-based Mika Yoga Wear has stopped selling a $64 yoga mat printed with the image of Ganesha after a protest by a Hindu leader who has pushed for the removal of other products he said misused images of the deity, including socks sold by Urban Outfitters and gym pants sold on Amazon.com. Mika founder and creative director Laura Costa apologized in an e-mail to Universal Society of Hinduism president Rajan Zed, explaining the company had “worked with a local artist on this design and neither of us knew this would be inappropriate.” “We have removed this product from our site and will not continue to make more of this design,” she said in the e-mail, which was forwarded to The Denver Post by Zed. Costa was not immediately available for comment. There are about 3 million Hindus in the U.S., Zed said, calling the trivialization of Ganesha  “disturbing to Hindus world over.” Ganesha, he said, is highly revered in Hinduism and is “meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to sit on or put feet/buttocks/legs on or sweat on.” Zed has a long history of defending Ganesha and other Hindu deities from misuse.
