Facing a five-man infield, Kelby Tomlinson hit a bases-loaded single up the middle against lefty Kevin Siegrist, who had trouble throwing strikes throughout the ninth inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny called in outfielder Brandon Moss to be a fifth infielder, but it didn’t help. Byrd’s grand slam was the Giants’ eight of the season, setting a franchise record, and second in two days, following Kelby Tomlinson’s on Thursday. The bases were loaded for Byrd only because third baseman Matt Carpenter and shortstop Jhonny Peralta made errors and Buster Posey was hit by a pitch, Wacha’s 95-mph fastball connecting with Posey’s left arm. Next pitch, Byrd hit his eighth career grand slam. The gift-exchange continued in the fourth inning when the Cardinals got three runs in large part because the Giants didn’t make plays. With runners on first and second, third baseman Matt Duffy fielded Peralta’s grounder and could have gotten an easy out if he stepped on third, but he must have been thinking he had a shot at a double play and threw to second. Kolten Wong hit a grounder to second baseman Tomlinson that should have gotten the Giants out of the inning, but shortstop Ehire Adrianza mishandled Tomlinson’s throw, and Stephen Piscotty followed with a two-run double.
