The fantasy twist is just one distinctive facet of "The Sorcerer," which the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston is producing for only the third time in its 62 years. [...] a revival of "The Sorcerer" - Gilbert and Sullivan's third show and the predecessor of "H.M.S. Pinafore," their first hit - is automatically noteworthy, and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society performs with spirit. To tear down the walls, he hires John Wellington Wells, the sorcerer, to slip a love potion into the tea at a party. Part of what makes "The Sorcerer" such fun is that Gilbert and Sullivan reveal the villagers' passions to the audience even before the potion sets them loose. "The Sorcerer" includes euphonious melodies and purling orchestral sounds that, to me, hark back to the music of Felix Mendelssohn, who was an icon in 19th-century England. The chorus and orchestra, led by conductor Brian Runnels, gave the music zip and sweetness, and the visual setting was appealing, too. The set, designed by Tom Boyd, featured the stately exterior of a manor; Dena Scheh's costumes helped the bluebloods look posh.
