Governor Candidates Debate, Agree On Keene Melee

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan and Republican businessman Walt Havenstein found something to agree on Wednesday in their first televised debate in the governor's race — those responsible for the weekend riot near the Keene Pumpkin Festival should be held accountable. WBIN-TV aired the debate, which included the candidates' comments on the Saturday melee that prompted police to turn out in riot gear and use tear gas to control huge crowds near the festival site after some among them began throwing bottles, rocks, debris, and other objects. Hassan has pointed to bipartisan action during her first term — the expansion of Medicaid and a gas tax hike to fund road and bridge improvements — as evidence she deserves another term.
