Warning: This post contains spoilers for the sixth season of Game of Thrones.
At this point, writing about ghastly deaths on Game of Thrones feels like writing about how the sky is blue — why, in other words, should we go out of our way to remark upon the inevitable?
Sunday night’s episode was the season six finale.
Bursting with pride. Tonight the @Viola_Beach boys' music made it to the greatest stage of them all https://t.co/Bnzb9FAkxU

Coldplay performed a cover of Viola Beach’s “Boys That Sing” during their set at Britain’s Glastonbury Music Festival as a tribute to the late English band.
While driving through Sweden on their first world tour, the four members of rising indie-rock band Viola Beach—Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin—and their manager Craig Tarry plunged into a canal in a tragic car crash that killed all of them on February 13.
Coldplay’s vocalist Chris Martin told the audience that Viola Beach “reminded us of us, and of all the other bands that come through here—the excitement and the joy and the hope—and we really felt that in them.”
Performing Viola Beach’s “Boys That Sing,” Martin said, was an attempt “to create Viola Beach’s alternative future for them and let them play Glastonbury for a song.”
As the audience went into raptures, he said: “This is what maybe would have been you in twenty years … I hope we do your song justice.”
Game of Thrones is and has for several years been the show on top of the TV heap—winning Emmys, blocking out late-spring Sunday nights, and defining Monday mornings in the office and on social media. And it’s done it all by denying the pleasures TV traditionally grants.
The series, which ended its sixth season Sunday night, has always saved its heaviest artillery for season’s end, but never did the result feel quite so lopsided as this year, as the show prepares for what has been speculated will be a final winding-down.
Sunday night’s BET Awards began with an act that wasn’t on the schedule — Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar performing “Freedom,” the anthemic track from Beyonce’s album “Lemonade.”
It was an intense, thoroughly choreographed performance, replete with flying sparks and smoke and a stage that looked convincingly like it was made of molten lava.
Beyonce has recently taken to marketing herself as a political artist of sorts, and Sunday night’s show wasn’t an exception — it began with a voiceover from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech.
