Guys together just being guys [...] in typing those words I realize I may be conjuring up images of Jerry Sandusky and the other child predators we have come to hear about. The vast majority of relationships between men and boys are important, healthful, useful. [...] I'm afraid they may be distorted by all the publicity given to child molesters. The combo can do great damage to all relationships built on trust. There are boys and girls who need male role models, who need masculine energy, if only to understand the masculine energy within themselves. The revulsion for the acts of a few sexual predators will feed homophobic bigotry, as though sexual orientation were some kind of marker for child abuse. To be clear: I have no problem with the penalties handed down to the people at Penn State who were complicit in the cover-up of Sandusky's acts. [...] the severity of the sanctions will at least have a deterrent effect on other administrators at other colleges wrestling with their own little cover-ups - I bet that's happening right now, incidentally - and that's as it should be. Thinking back on my experience, I wonder what has changed now, or will change.
