"Heaven Is for Real," a well-acted Christian film about a boy who claims to see heaven, goes over the top on many occasions, but not for reasons that some might suspect. Though you can probably guess from the title how it all ends up, the scenes in which the characters struggle with their core beliefs are thoughtful and dignified. What rings less true is the Mom and apple pie vision of the Nebraska town where the story plays out. Greg Kinnear, one of our most undervalued actors, is his usual solid self as Todd Burpo, a pastor whose spiritual beliefs are thrown out of kilter when his 4-year-old son, Colton, nearly dies from appendicitis and casually announces afterward that he's paid a visit to heaven. [...] the images of heaven somehow diminish the impact of the boy's experience, perhaps because heaven is just too profound for anyone to film.
