Heroin was the probable cause in 118 of the opioid-related deaths, which is actually down slightly from 2015 (132) and 2014 (156), while prescription-type opioids accounted for 107 deaths. Some of those were attributed to fentanyl, a synthetic painkiller that's helping to fuel an increase in overdose deaths throughout North America.
