"I don't want Birmingham to be Atlanta." I've heard some variation of that comment countless times since I arrived in the Magic City nearly nine years ago. It usually pops up when discussing metro Birmingham's growth prospects – especially in regards to population. The general sentiment of what I've called "the Atlanta argument" is that Birmingham shouldn't aspire to grow or to increase its population because the Magic City's size is one of its charms.
