Back on the job Friday, Lakemoor police officer Nicole Gaborek nonchalantly summed up how she spent much of December. “All I had to do was agree to let someone take my kidney,” the 27-year-old said. “It wasn’t that hard for me.” What doesn’t seem like much to Gaborek makes her a hero in the eyes of Rachel Schultz, a 31-year-old Navy veteran originally from Harvard, and many others.  Suffering from kidney disease with no cure – aside from an organ transplant – Schultz reached stage 5 of the disease, considered kidney failure, in February 2018. She spent almost two years on dialysis.
