Japanese Shocked, Saddened By Purported Slaying Of Hostage

TOKYO (AP) — The news of the purported killing of journalist Kenji Goto by Islamic State militants rushed through Japan early Sunday morning, shocking and saddening people in a nation that has embraced pacifism and where many were not emotionally prepared to cope with the hostage crisis: Maybe an attack could happen even here, said cosmetics company employee Tomoko Ogino, 51, as she clutched a Yomiuri newspaper extra edition being handed out on a busy downtown Tokyo street corner. The Islamic State is just a criminal organization, not even a real country, said cab driver Hiroyuki Sakai, 66, who said he had heard the news on the morning radio broadcast. Every time you smile with those around you, you will be sure to remember that big smile Kenji always gave us, wrote Taku Nishimae, a filmmaker living in New York who knew Goto, and started the I am Kenji Facebook page. [...] he was brave, said a sobbing Shoichi Yukawa, the father of Haruna Yukawa, the other Japanese hostage who was purportedly killed by the Islamic State group. The fight against terrorism comes second, said a 51-year-old volunteer, who only gave his first name, Masahiko, for fear of a backlash from a society that doesn't favor outspoken people.
