Show of hands: Who’s planning to see this weekend’s big movie?
That was a trick question. Because with screens getting smaller, choices getting wider and audiences getting narrower, the entire notion of “big movie” has become exponentially more difficult to define.
No doubt, such worldwide behemoths as “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Fate of the Furious” count as big movies, if only in deference to their budgets, spectacle and wide-ranging appeal.

“Food waste was a lowly place to be,” said food waste activist-pioneer, Tristam Stuart, recalling a lackluster gathering a few years back. But last Saturday night, observing a thriving Tribeca Film Festival crowd at the Mission Chinese restaurant in downtown New York, he admired how far his cause had come.

“Broken Night” is an eight-minute virtual reality short created by Alon Benari, Tal Zubalsky and Alex Vlack that allows viewers to go down different narrative paths during four different “choice moments” over the course of the story. All these pathways tell the story of a couple, played by actors Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola, a couple in real life, returning home only to have their argument interrupted when they hear the presence of an intruder.
A day after Universal Pictures optioned the rights to the Madonna biopic Blonde Ambition, the singer is voicing her opinion about the unauthorized project, saying only she can tell her story.
“Nobody knows what I know and what I have seen,” Madonna wrote Tuesday on social media. “Only I can tell my story.
