Even in photographs, the bronze statue that marks the grave of Clover Adams in Rock Creek Cemetery is moving. In person, the draped figure sitting in inscrutable silence is more moving still. Sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’s 1891 work is perhaps the finest example of a certain type of Gilded Age funerary sculpture.
