Conditions are mixed for American workers this Labor Day. Middle- and lower-class wages have stagnated as recent gains have gone mainly to already high-paid earners, and union representation continues to slide, especially in the private sector. But many states and cities are moving to increase their minimum wage, and unions still represent thousands of Kansas City area workers and millions nationwide.
