SAM’S POINT — At the top of Sam’s Point Preserve, the smell of smoke and burnt wood lingered in the air Saturday afternoon. A large section of the pitch pine barrens overlooking Walker Valley is wiped out, but every home is intact, and every emergency responder is safe.The members of the New York State Incident Management Team who oversaw the week-long battle against a 2,028-acre wildfire on Sam’s Point were all breathing sighs of relief on Saturday.
