The best starting pitcher in the 2010 postseason. The two-time Cy Young Award winner was diagnosed with lower back tightness on his left side, and he’s iffy for the rest of the Series, a bad sign for manager Bruce Bochy, who has had limited bullpen options because Strickland and Machi haven’t been reliable. If a pitcher is removed from a World Series roster, he can be replaced only by a pitcher (George Kontos?). After a 23-day layoff and pitching for the first time since the regular-season finale, Lincecum started the seventh inning with the Giants trailing 7-2, their bullpen melting down during a five-run sixth, an inning in which Bochy used five pitchers. From there, he finished the season with an 8.33 ERA, lost his rotation spot and opened the postseason as the final reliever, not used until Wednesday, even in the 18-inning Division Series game. Zito was left off the 2010 playoff roster and returned in 2012 to make some momentum-changing appearances. At least Lincecum has been eligible all October, and he took full advantage of Wednesday’s debut by pitching himself back into relevance, a refreshing upgrade from Strickland’s and Machi’s recent showings. Wednesday, he finally made news for the right reasons, retiring five straight batters.
