Twists of fate have, of course, been the lifeblood of opera plots since the inception of the art, but they also have a way of creeping into operatic performances, especially given the vulnerabilities of singers' vocal cords. Such a twist lent an extra touch of drama to the performance of Verdi's "Otello" that opened the Lyric Opera season Saturday at the Civic Opera House.
