U.S. Sen. Angus King on Friday announced nearly $75,000 grant to fund an initiative by Maine’s Pine Tree Legal Services to improve civil legal assistance for veterans, particularly for female veterans. Pine Tree Legal Services, a Portland-based nonprofit that provides civil legal assistance to those who cannot afford it, will use the money to continue to expand one of its websites, StatesideLegal.org, to address services available to women who may not know they are eligible for veterans’ services. King and Pine Tree Executive Director Nan Heald said during a ceremony at Portland City Hall that the agency has only enough resources to provide assistance to about 20 percent of the people seeking legal help and relies on websites it maintains to provide the public with legal options, rights and available programs. “We cannot possibly meet all of the demands with one-on-one lawyer time, but one of the ways we can help people is to provide people with the information so they can deal with the issues themselves,” said King, an independent who once was a staff attorney for Pine Tree Legal Services. The grant funding is provided by Legal Services Corp., a nonprofit agency that is the nation’s largest single funding entity of aid for low-income Americans.
