Maine Police Intensify Seat Belt Enforcement

Law enforcement officials are cracking down on seat belt scofflaws in Maine. More than 50 law enforcement agencies including the Maine State Police are in the midst of a two-week seat belt enforcement campaign across the state. Federal highway safety dollars are contributing to overtime for officers during the “click it or ticket” campaign, which coincides with the start of the busy tourism season. The director of the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, Lauren Stewart, says almost half of Maine’s recent highway deaths have involved drivers and passengers who fail to buckle up.
