Often disaster is measured in resources: number of trees felled, houses destroyed, cases of water, days without power, etc.
But last year when the tornado dissipated, the most important – and plentiful – resource was the thousands of volunteers who immediately appeared to help their neighbors.

“Everyone wants to do something, so our biggest job was organizing volunteers and making sure they went where was most efficient,” said Patty Tucker, executive director of the Northeast Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Two previous tornadoes revealed the path for North Mississippi Medical Center to follow in the aftermath of the April 28 tornado.
Lessons learned from the devastating 2011 Smithville tornado were incorporated into policies, said Dr. Joe Johnsey, NMMC emergency department medical director. Drills helped them turn the policies into practice.
“You’re never fully prepared for it, but we were as prepared as we could be,” Johnsey said.
Even before the bad weather arrived in Tupelo on April 28, preparations began.

TUPELO – The progress Tupelo made in one year after being devastated by an EF3 tornado reassures Mayor Jason Shelton and other city leaders that the “Tupelo Spirit” is alive and well.
Since the tornado touched down in Tupelo and devastated neighborhoods and businesses, it’s been all hands on deck for the All-America City.
Though some of those efforts, such as debris removal, might have been more apparent in the days and weeks following April 28, 2014, steps are still being taken one year later to ensure the city and its residents eventually will return to life as normal.
“I can’t believe it looks this good this quick,” Shelton said.
