Stories Related to Man Convicted Of 1987 Murder With Zain Testimony To Get New Trial

By Kate White A Cabell County judge on Thursday overturned the murder conviction of a man serving life in prison for a 1987 killing, finding that testimony given by discredited former State Police serologist Fred Zain tainted his trial. Phillip A. Ward, 51, is entitled to a new trial as "a matter of fundamental fairness," Cabell Circuit Judge Alfred Ferguson wrote. Ward has served 29 years in prison for the killing of his co-worker, Carol Carter.
