Man Found With $700k Of Heroin Gets 11 Years

A 49-year-old Crystal Lake man pleaded guilty Friday to unlawful possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Roman Castro entered a guilty plea to manufacturing and delivery of 100 to 400 grams of heroin/analog, according to court documents. Additional drug charges including possession or manufacturing with intent to sell 900-plus grams of fentanyl and meth, and delivery of 100 to 400 grams were dismissed. On May 2, 2017, authorities found several pounds of heroin with an estimated street value of nearly $700,000 in the apartment of Roman Castro, authorities said at the time of his arrest. Detectives recovered 3,462 grams, or about 7 pounds, of heroin, scales and packaging materials from Castro’s apartment. At the time of his arrest, former McHenry County State’s Attorney John Gibbs said the heroin seized could have been divided into about 35,000 doses of about a tenth of a gram each. Detectives had received information that Castro was holding a large amount of heroin.
