Maryville Stops D-b Just Short Of State Tournament

MARYVILLE — The Maryville Rebels were able to jump ahead of Dobyns-Bennett in the second quarter of their TSSAA Class AAA boys basketball sectional Tuesday night thanks to a tenacious effort on the offensive glass. The Rebels were able to pull away from the Indians in the second half with precise outside shooting, and they were able to close out a 74-58 victory and secure a trip to the state tournament with steady ball-handling and a 6-for-6 effort from the foul line over the final two minutes. But the one thing Maryville wasn’t able to do was make the Tribe quit, and that gave D-B coach Charlie Morgan one final chance to be proud of a team that exceeded expectations all season long.“They kept fighting and kept fighting, and that’s what I wanted to see from them,” Morgan said.
