McGehee accepts assignment to Triple-A Sacramento MILWAUKEE — Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that he is happy that third baseman Casey McGehee accepted an assignment to Triple-A Sacramento, where he will try to find his stroke and earn a promotion back to San Francisco. McGehee started Tuesday night’s game against Nashville and former Giant Barry Zito. When he gets his game going, and everything is healthier with his knee, he could help us down the road and give us depth. The Giants technically optioned McGehee to Triple-A. Because he had five years of major-league service time, he had a right to decline the assignment by Wednesday, forcing the Giants to trade him, place him on outright waivers or release him. By rule, McGehee must stay in Sacramento at least 10 days unless another big-leaguer gets hurt. [...] he could replace the disabled player immediately. With off days on the horizon, the Giants might drop their 13th pitcher and restore a five-man bench. Promoting McGehee would be an option if he starts hitting in Sacramento. The Giants have pledged to revisit the situation with McGehee occasionally rather than leave the 32-year-old in Triple-A limbo, a courtesy for an older, experienced player. Matt Cain (flexor tendon strain) threw to hitters for the first time since spring training and could be headed for a minor-league rehab assignment soon, perhaps next week, after he throws to hitters again this week at home. Henry Schulman is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer. Minor-league pitching instructor Lee Smith and team executive Tony Siegle will represent the Giants at the June 8 amateur draft in New Jersey.
