The original Metroid co-creator and now Metroid: Samus Returns producer, Yoshio Sakamoto has talked about his interest in creating more 2D titles for the series. In the most recent issue of Game Informer, Sakamoto talks about developing the original Metroid and how he "... wasn't sure if players would enjoy the game" despite believing that it could be a "special franchise". He explains that, "through the development of Metroid 1, I really grasped the possibilities and potential of a video game".
